Birthday Bash of Many Deep Sleep Nights and Uncanny Valley – Featuring “Yume Nikki”

It’s not my birthday. This post is a few months late, but regardless, here it is! My 400th entry for LR19 I decided to be a certain cult classic in the indie video games development department! “Yume Nikki”, translated as “Dream Diary”, also known as “Dreaming Nikki”, “Nikki’s Dream Course”, “Future Nikki” and “Vomit- chan” on different parts of the internet.

This game received sort of a remake, rather, a re- imagination, recently. Around one year ago is what I mean by “recently”. It did not do well, people were really hyped about it for two months or so and then I never saw or heard anything about it on forums and whatnot. For one thing, I think they made the game swing more towards actual horror, while the original is more on the psychological trip side. No way I find the original any scary or horrifying! Weird and a bit a feel of uneasiness, yes! But nothing more than that! Anyways, people did not enjoy all that much this new change of heart, given that even the original creator of the game took part in the development of this “remake”.

“Yume NIkki” has quite a bunch of really good fan- made games I’ve gotta say. It also inspired billion other games in all those years. I myself was not aware of the game until like… seven or eight years ago. Maybe nine, I can’t remember the exact date, even though the forum where I was introduced to it still has the posts active. I remember that we even recorded our opinions on the game and posted them. Sadly, I know that I used Mega Upload, so that file is no more. It’s kind of sad, because I could have used a good laugh from the past!

“Yume Nikki” also inspired to a certain extend games I was working on as well!

What about the actual game? Is it any good? I don’t think so!

I think that one of the reasons I was impressed by it was the fact that for an RPGmaker game, it was not involved in any way with battles. I always enjoyed the exploration parts in other, early 2k/3RPGmaker games, but I really, really hated the grinding and battles in them. Imaging having to slay the same monster over and over using like… a “Flare” spell constantly or something, all and all so you can get stronger and be able to bypass certain areas. Come on now, who would make exploring the map a chore, what is this?

If anything, “Yume Nikki” is pretty mediocre. You explore around, you collect effects which give you powers and you bring those back to the start, where you lay them as eggs. Judging by that, my theory is that the plot revolves around the dream of chicken who thinks that its a girl who’s having dreams. I mean, the areas are not all that complicated to navigate, one might feel like lost during their early playthrough, but honestly, a labyrinth of such level is more or less fitting for a chicken brain! The game manages to create quite the unique atmosphere, what with visuals, soundtrack and characters, but it lasts for not all that long. Game can leave you with a great early impressions, but they are bound to fade eventually. The only real difficulty that I ever had with the game is finding one of the effects that’s hidden in 8-bit land, which requires the traverse of a semi- confusing path with choices. Even that’s isn’t that much of a hassle. Perhaps due to the game’s player- friendly nature it managed to gather some of the total amount of its many followers. That and the fact that it’s free to play as well, maybe…

Yume Nikki 1.1 DONE!

The grand selling point of this game was the fact that people could discuss it and make all sorts of theories about the world it spawned. As time goes on however, people’s interest starts to fade away. Expectations for further game updates were there, but given that we got a remake that wasn’t a grand beef jerky store opening… then what’s the hope for when any actual updates come out?… If they come out! Something tells me that even the creator might be aware that at this point, we are all tired of watching the wall paint dry. The wall paint that we provided…

Yume Nikki Extra 1.1

Some fans made their own update to the game, that adds additional new worlds and an ending. This update for the most part tried to work with the effects and make actual puzzles, something which the original game lacked. It was an alright attempt, I liked it. There isn’t much to say about it really…

If I had to give this game a score, it would something look like a fridge in the desert, with a single carton of expired milk in it.
