RA Invasion [Part 9] – May the Maul be with you!

“Got Death Star?” This is my favorite Star Wars commercial of all times honestly! I mean, we all could use a tool for planetary obliteration more often than we would like to admit. It’s not about the silly political ideologies of erasing certain species and their home world from existence for the sake of an imaginary better future, but rather, the thrill and responsibility of having control over something and how “properly” one might use it. Cake tastes great, I know that! But what I’ve learned is that it tastes better when you share it with another person. Don’t hold back! Buy a Death Star for a person that you really like or love! With a present like this, you’ll be treated as well to the knowledge of the inner nature of that one certain, special someone. Did they like the wrapping? Have they even used the present or did they just toss it in the corner? If you ask me, it’s all about that one smile they make when they receive the present…

Something, something RA weekend with the usual Twisted Wario update, GBA emulation issues that I’ve fixed and I spend the rest of the time playing the first GBA Lego Star Wars game. I also got a late birthday present from my brother – A small drone! I’ve been investing some time into that as well! It’s pretty fun learning the controls and I do like the idea of getting better at controlling these machines. Maybe if I become good enough I can successfully eliminate Gordon Freeman and put an end to a saga that has been dragging for eons now!

LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game [Game Boy Advance]

I am no strangers to LEGO or Star Wars as a whole. I’ve owned various simple LEGO sets as a kid. Like… a few pirate ships with a pirate crew and… that’s pretty much about it, I guess… I’ve been introduced to the original “Star Wars” trilogy by my brother when I was a baby pretty much, who at the time, managed to hype the Obi- Wan vs Vader fight from episode four to seem like the best thing ever! I remember being really afraid of the lightsaber battles, because I could not bare to watch a person die! Again, I was with a young and pure mind, untouched by the cruelty of action movies.

Years ago, my friend brought a copy of LEGO Star Wars for PC to my place, which had all the episodes from 1 to 6 and whatnot. I’m not going to go into details about it, but I want to say, that as far as cooperative video games go, that one was a nuclear blast! It was really good and we were really sad once we 100% it, because the amount of content the game had was not enough to satisfy our needs! We wanted more, because it was THAT good, really!

So here I am, looking at the GBA version that features episodes 1 to 3 of the saga. I personally did not enjoy the original “Episode 2 and 3” movies, despite waiting since kid for them to come out! I can’t say for sure why, maybe because they did not have that adventurous feel to them like the rest of the episodes. Anyways, this game is played from top- down isometric view. It’s pretty generous, what with unlimited lives, constant checkpoints and merchants that can upgrade your stats for a price. Because of the perspective, it takes a while for one to get used to aiming their attacks properly. It’s a very short game overall, you can go through all episodes in one afternoon. Unlocking every character takes some time though, with the game forcing you to replay and grind through levels for additional studs. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the playable characters that you had at disposal could offer more in terms of gameplay. Most of them share quite a lot of similar traits and that’s not very good for the replay value. Sure, I did all the missions again while avoiding getting any upgrades and whatnot… But apart from that, I can only see another potential run being fun using the repair droid character or someone else who in general is not well suited for the task of having an easy time. Here’s a tip to make your life easier: Darth Maul is a really, really good character! He can access most areas with golden studs, takes less damage from enemies… I think [?] and his special ability is easy to quick spam and aim. A really good character to invest a mere 3k studs!

The game does not offer any exciting platforming whatsoever. Most of it is just you fighting enemies on set pieces, which the developers didn’t held back on reusing over for later levels. I liked the cheat codes rewards, there are some funny things with which you can fool around for a bit. No multiplayer though, this game is for loner wolves. As far as visuals go… they are pretty rough, in a good sense! The badly looping music samples enhance the whole experience even more!

I had fun with this game overall. It was quite bland and pretty bad, just the way I tend to kiss girls on the lips!

RA Invasion [Part 6] – Invade! Lazy Invader

Not a very exciting RA weekend. Rather than playing, I spent most of my time lying on bed and thinking about games that I don’t want to play, along with my constant dreaded thought of “What if tomorrow something destroys the Earth? Everything Humanity worked so hard for over generations would be put to waste.” It’s not the best mood for one to be hanging on, but sometimes there are moments where we can’t shake off certain feelings, no matter if we managed to come in terms with them over the years of our growth.

Croc [Game Boy Color]

Alright, maybe there would be at least one good thing to our total obliteration – There will be no more “Croc” for the Game Boy Color and none of us will be tortured by this game anymore!

So this version of Croc is a 2D platformer. I do not know how well does Croc fare in his original 3D platformer games, but in this one he just sucks ass. The jumping is very fast and sharp. While moving and attacking an enemy, if you manage to defeat them, Croc won’t stop in his tracks, but rather, continue on for a while. Avoid doing that on baddies located near pitfalls! When it comes to said enemies, the hit detection is really awful. In contrast to these problems (/), the game answers with two easy solutions – Bland level design with low difficulty and extra lives everywhere! By everywhere, I mean that at the end of the game, I was already maxed out! One major issue for those who would want to lose a portion of their minds and go for a full clear of this game are the mini- games at the end of each level. You see, each level has these critters that you need to find and rescue, hidden all over the place. However, each level has one of them being the reward for completing the mini- game at the end, to which you only have access if you find all the BONUS letters! Those aren’t really all that well hidden, similar to the critters, but in case you fail to complete a certain mini- game, you’ll have to redo said level all over again! The most troublesome of the bunch is the sliding puzzle mini- game. The rest are fairly easy, though during your first introduction to them, you might find yourself being at disadvantage due to lack of knowledge regarding how does each one control or play.

Your health is represented by the collectable crystals, which grant you an extra life per each 100th. While that is fine and dandy, given that the game showers you with extra lives, you might be more interested in just keeping the number of the crystals high enough so you can tank through stuff, rather than reset the number for a mere 1- UP. The extra life would be meaningless anyways if you die a dozen of times after that, due to being unable to hold your ground against the enemies, who tend to move pretty fast and come off screen in a blast!

The reward for finding all critters is pretty lame, as the game just gives you access to all the mini- games that you’ve played… Wow!

Some of the bosses in this game are OK. They require a bit of thought and direct approach isn’t usually the answer. Even if you lose all your crystals to them, there is a small section before each boss that provides you with some for the fight. I think that the amount is fair enough, as it doesn’t give you all that much extra hits. However, there is still the issue with one reaching the boss with high amount of crystals carried over from another level. But hey! If you feel like this game is challenging for your own personal level, sure, why not?

I really, really hated the mine- cart section! Not the first time I’ve been disappointed by that type of level in a video game though!

Hammerin’ Harry: Ghost Building Company [Game Boy]

A very fun action platformer, quite easy in general in terms of difficulty, though there are a few kinda’ tough parts that require a bit of learning. Also, featuring a boss that provides you with enough extra lives and health until you are full, right before the final level! That sure is something I’ve never seen before in a game and I am enjoying this idea quite a lot, especially given that the final level is not really a walk in the park, at least not on your first initial run.

I like how the plot is represented as a movie in a cinema, where people are watching the events unfold. Gen-san Harry has to save his girlfriend from all sorts of Ghosts ‘n Goblins this time around, which… managed to fit in with the whole construction theme quite well. You get to fight a haunted giant Nail, demolish a ghost blimp, part by part and eventually, bring destruction to the ghost making machine itself. Of course, given that this is a [HORROR] themed game, at the end it is revealed that EVIL NEVER DIES!

It’s quite an entertaining twist of events and it made me think about how silly this type of endings are in actual horror movies. Despite the fact that I’ve seen those a billion times, I don’t find them boring or outdated to this day.

But the machine keeps reviving ghosts and the game doesn’t really comes to a halt… I wonder if there is a secret to it that no one has found yet? Maybe a certain combination of buttons could unlock a secret New Game + or something? I highly doubt it though.

This game is a pretty good entry in the Gen-san Harry series. In general, I think Hammerin’ Gen-san is pretty underrated and overlooked. Maybe it’s because it’s not as fast paced as other games and you need some good timing against some enemies?…

RA Invasion [Part 5] – Grind harder!

Pretty good weekend on RA. I got to play through a bunch of platformers, some of which were pretty great while others – not as much. In fact, not at all, honestly. An example for that is “The Flintstones” for the Game Boy by OCEAN! The only good thing that this game did right were the bosses, which were pretty decent in terms of variety and design. I really enjoyed the fight where you have to drug your boss with drinks and put him to sleep. The actual levels themselves are pretty bland and boring, to a certain extend some of them feel way longer than they should be. The length would not have been a problem if there was more to the repeatable hop and bop, litter it all with enemies, traps and pitfalls.

The game is at least pretty generous with its mini- games granting extra lives. It doesn’t go over the top with them at least, but it gives you enough to keep you going while making sure that you don’t make too many mistakes.

I would have added this game to the vault, but I wish to experiment a bit further with the invaders- clone mini – game that you can access on certain levels, if you have any coins in your disposal. Can you go over the top in terms of high score? Will it reset after level 99? How much does the difficulty pick up as the levels go? Those are very important questions that need a SERIOUS ANSWERS!

Disney Princess [Game Boy Advance]

Something that I did not expect from this game was to be offering an actual interactive variety of levels that would keep my interest for a while. I was wrong. The game has it all, from good times platforming action, not- so hard to learn mazes, house management and DDR to Little Mermaid 3 and Jasmine’s Assassin’s Creed. The game could have done better with some of the controls, but at least the hit detection is pretty alright. Disney Princess manages to create an atmosphere that perfectly represents both the beauty and harshness of the princess life. Hats off to the RA set for making this game even more challenging and FUN!

Kid Dracula [Game Boy]

I’m not big on the Castlevania games, in fact, I haven’t beaten any of them yet! This spin- off title for the Game Boy was pretty great and fun platformer though! I can’t believe I played something that got an actual laugh from me. A laugh from enjoying myself and having a good time. A laugh representing that I find something very entertaining and humorous. This game got it! The cast is so goofy and charming, I love it! The level design is well- made, with a good progress flow to it. The game can be a bit tough on some parts, but it’s nothing too complicated for one to get stuck on! Great and enjoyable boss fights, the mini- games are easy to play and they shower you with lives… Well, I don’t know about that one… I guess it’s an additional insurance that the designers put to ENSURE the “Good times” experience. I honestly can’t blame them for that…

I really like that the game makes use of every special ability that you get, even if some of them are necessary for only like… two areas in the whole game. You would think that if you get a power that lets you fly everywhere from the start of the game would be a tool that you can abuse easily, but no… The game is well- designed and the abilities are balanced good enough. Man, I really did had a blast with this one, didn’t i?…

I remember playing the NES version a while back, but I did not enjoy it for some reason. I wonder why? Maybe I should get back to it at some point in the near future?

Joe & Mac [Game Boy]

This is the port of “Joe & Mac” where charged attacks obliterate the bosses in no time and getting hit while moving or jumping can sent you flying uncontrollably like a ball from pinball. I don’t remember having those issues in other versions that I’ve played of this game. I also don’t remember enemies dropping exploding bombs. Who would go to such an extend as to implant explosives in cave men and dinosaurs? Were sexy cave babes worth it? Maybe. What do I know about the values of those ancient times? It’s also a video game for fuck’s sake! Of course sexy cave babes are worth it! That’s it, as long as you manage to get them! This game features all three different endings from the original Arcade game, but I am not sure as to how you access each of them. It’s not based on score as far as I know. I think it’s randomized, but it might have something to do with how many hits you take from the final boss, which is improbable, but who knows, really?

I also wanted to beat the high score, but that run ended up being a few hours grind for reaching a score that the game cannot record and instead uses glitched graphics to display. Was it a fun experience? Hell no! There is nothing fun in having to grind baby T-rexes for hours from the skeleton dinosaur boss. I made sure to bring the fire power all the way to it, as it makes short works of the babies, each of which is worth 1000 points.

I thought that I was done with the grind, but then I went to do the DuckTales 2 set for the NES, which was updated a long time ago. It’s a great set, except for the one achievement that makes you grind gold in the Niagara stage. Why would you make people grind in a game with a good flow to it? Why would you kill the overall enjoyment of the game for the sake of altering the gameplay in a very bland and bad way? If you compare it to the other achievements in the set, you’ll notice that they fit perfectly with the game’s design and spirit, while that one is just… flopped tuna over the birthday cake. At least you don’t have to grind all that LONG…

Dragon Bride – A fan-made title that takes on the idea of “What if “Dragon Quest” was a bride?:

When it comes to “Dragon Quest” related material, all I know about the series is that it consists of various RPGs, all adored by Japanese peeps, due to the usual VIDEO GAME CHILDHOOD IMPACT! I don’t know anything else about the games though. Apart from visual recognition, if I were to be asked to explain plot, characters or specific gameplay part, I would probably come with an excuse to go out and buy some milk.

“Dragon Bride” is a fan-made production title that puts the series into the light of pornography. Despite being of Japanese origin, the game does also come with a horrible English translation, which adds both to a bit of humor and disappointment. Given my lackluster knowledge on the “Dragon Quest” series, I can’t really provide a good explanation about the plot, but as a whole, as I have seen it, it’s about the Hero being tricked by some Dragon-wizard lady into a deal, which separates the world in half, wherein each part gets populated by a fraction of one gender only. The Hero is send to the part where only males exist and the Dragon-wizard lady remains in the part where only females are. A problem regarding reproduction arises, so the Dragon-wizard lady uses magic to grow a penis, planning to potentially deal with that problem by herself. There’s your plot setting for the whole game! You also have to capture a princess that managed to escape your clutches or something, but you don’t get to do anything to her, regardless. [Unless you have the GLASSES item equipped, which lets you see her naked towards the end of the game!]

Dragon Bride 1.1 DONE!

As the game puts you into the shoes of the Dragon-wizard lady, you get to travel through various stages, each consisting of certain number of small areas filled with enemies. You can fight at close range with your weapon or you can shuffle through various spells and cast them instead. While you can unleash some hell on your enemies, inflicting a specific amount of damage can also stun them, which lets you have some “sexy” time with your victims. The whole procedure is composed of a slider that you can adjust for how slow or fast do you wish the scene to proceed, all in all while dealing with a randomized time limit. Quite exciting indeed, especially if you are into not doing much. I am quite the fan of that regarding certain circumstances!

The game is not all that difficult, but there are some annoying parts. However, they can be passed quite easily if you abuse the not-so great enemy A.I. and the items/upgrades you can purchase from the shop. A player might find themselves replaying a level or two just so they can purchase everything from the shop, but to be fair, it doesn’t feel all that rewarding, really. You can obtain the best gear fairly fast, which makes the lower tier fairly useless, apart from a cosmetic usage. Speaking of that, the game has quite the notch on that, as it even comes with the option of not only customizing the main character, but the other generic enemies in the erotic scenes as well. [Unique bosses cannot be customized, sadly!]

In conclusion, I wouldn’t say that I enjoyed the game all that much. The overall gameplay mechanic felt pretty boring, all in all with the fairly unsatisfying scenes. Maybe I’m just asking for too much, but in the end, this is a good title for a single afternoon blast off or two. Whatever you prefer. Whatever… 4.7 out of 10.

Psycho Waluigi – The 300th and life beyond! [Part 1] /event/

Starting off the summer season with a bang, as the 300th entry for the LR19 vault has being finally reached! What makes me even more happy is the fact that I dedicated it to a really awesome game – “Psycho Waluigi!” It’s a fan-made game that features that waaaaaaaaan Nintendo character who’s like Luigi, but with purple clothes, evil grin and a hella’ radical chin. Yes, indeed! The one with the trumpet! Anyways, this game is free, it’s on the glorious PC and surprisingly, it pleases beyond any average expectations.

An accident involving hot air balloon and birds sets the plot of the game into motion, as Waluigi finds himself upon an unfamiliar land called Unconcia. One thing leads to another and he ally himself with a being known as Psycho Iris, who grants him of course psychic powers and gives the idea of using them to conquer the kingdom. Riches and huge amount of gum is promised, so in a bit, you find yourself being sent already into action. On one point, the game plays like your typical [MARIO] game, where you move around, jump on enemies, collect coins… classic routine! However, shortly after you start, the actual gimmick hits in and changes your whole perspective for the future that lies ahead! I’m talking about PSYCHIC POWERS baby! You get a floating eye aura that can pick objects and enemies and toss them around or steal their powers. [If they have any!] At this point, your are more than likely to find yourself having a bit of trouble with the controls, given that you have to move both Waluigi and the aura. Practice makes perfect and this game has quite the positive attitude towards that, given its generous nature towards the player. Decent-size health bar, fairly constant HP pick-ups and the discarded life system! Still, despite all that, the game is quite challenging and has a pretty great scaling difficulty curve.

The game even has a shop where you can purchase power-ups to help you with what potential platforming difficulties you might be experiencing. You could essentially go over the whole game roughly, but hey! – How ’bout them crowns? You want the crowns! GET THE HIGH SCORE, MAKE LOTS OF MONEY, YEAH! Obtaining the crowns is the core challenge to this game, I would say. AND the rewards for doing so are pretty sweet. MORE LEVELS! PLAY AS CUTE GIRL GENERAL HAZEL! USE YOUR ACTUAL CURSOR AS IN-GAME OBJECT! [Neat little reward!] This game has lots of original content and variety in terms of characters, enemies and stages. Each new level that you play represents a different kingdom that you have to conquer, with its own additional gimmick, theme and whatnot. Talk about replay value, I’ve mentioned the crowns! Getting a good score on a level usually requires you to explore a bit more or be fast enough at a certain section. OR avoid getting hit and keep your power-ups intact! Time limit is fair and it also rewards you with additional score for a potential crown earning. Though to be fair, I’ve never seen it as a critical factor, so I guess you are more than free to take your time.

Graphics are really well done. This is a game where I’ve enjoyed looking at everything with a smile, which is not something that usually happens when I play other games. In terms of music, I don’t really have any comment. The soundtrack for the whole game is alright and I recognize few tracks being from other games, but hey! As long as my ears are not bleeding, I have no complains. No, really! The soundtrack is quite fine!

THIS GAME REMINDS ME OF “WARIO LAND 4” FOR SOME REASON AND I REALLY LIKE THAT ONE TOO!

My honest overall score for “Psycho Soldier Waluigi” is 9.6 out of 10. What a good video game!!!
