The White Chamber – Horror in Cyberpunk Space that you bite!

The last entry to the spooky LR19 volume for this year, a game that I was planning to make a post about one month ago. “The White Chamber” is an adventure game made with the Wintermute engine. I was quite curious to check out the tool itself and honestly, I was pretty impressed by the things you can do with it. Along with that, I was also surprised by the decent- sized game library that it had spawned, with some titles looking really intriguing. This one in general, I enjoyed quite a lot! The game features psychological horror elements, along with some cyberpunk aesthetics and a typical anime style for the early years of the past decade.

The game starts with a girl waking up from inside a coffin, with her memories about the past and her identity not being intact. It’s a setting I’m quite familiar with when it comes to introductions in certain games and movies, but honestly, I don’t see myself getting tired of it. What makes it better than other overused scenarios is the fact that it’s quite flexible and it gives the opportunity for the plot to do whatever and go wherever, without too much of a restriction really. The overall plot of “The White Chamber” is pretty good in my opinion, but I think that one should try it and experience it for themselves. This is a no- spoiler kingdom website- blog!

The whole story takes place on a space station. Some space station that is though, I’ve gotta give credit to the person behind the graphic and art design, as everything looks GREAT! This was some pretty creepy space station and the ambient sounds added to the whole atmosphere and experience fittingly well! When it comes to the horror part, the game goes for the whole “Dark world – Light world” gimmick, with the addition of subtlety involved. During my first run, the whole time I was expecting jump- scares or a chase sequence, but the game is too cool for that crap! “The White Chamber” is a pretty good example of the type of horror that I enjoy!

Another thing worth mentioning is the neat style of animation. This game features animated cutscenes, most of which are pretty short, but still enjoyable to watch. The puzzles in the game are really good and I honestly got stuck for quite a while at a certain, early point in the game. I was not bothered with it though.When your game is pleasant to look at, people won’t mind spending time with it, game progress or not. I like how they made some items in the game serving no purpose whatsoever, but they didn’t get crazy with the concept. You know what else I enjoyed? The game has various endings, some of which have certain requirements. However, the game has a way of indirectly giving you a hint as to how you are doing on your playthrough. THAT is quite helpful as it lets you analyze the outcome of your actions for a specific area or an event, early on. I’ve never seen a game do this before, at least not in such an effective way.

Things that I didn’t really enjoy – The “best” ending that you can achieve and that one “inside the console” Easter Egg. I don’t know, they feel kind of outdated as an ideas. They are silly. Dumb. Some people might still like them. I could have liked them if I played this game ten years ago. Maybe!

If you want to play a short adventure game with good puzzles and horror that doesn’t stink, this is the title for you. The game is also FREE! FREE!!!! I give it 8 out of 10.

There was something something about a steam- remastered version, which looks pretty promising, but why would you change the art style? Why does remastering a game is even a thing? Why can’t do world and the people be the way I want them? Wh..

So, long ago, a darkness felt on the lands of Parthoris. Cities burned and people complained. Meanwhile, in our world, there was a hype over various horror- themed RPGMaker games. That was a few years ago, back around the time I started university. I remember my friends talking about games like “The Witch’s House”, “Clock Tower”, “Invaders”, “Kekcroc”, “Life is peanut”, “Ib” and what the hell is an IB? How do you even pronounce it, I asked? Is it Ai – Bee? – to which I was IMMEDIATELY corrected and scolded. Thus, given that information in mind, I started calling the game Ai – Bee and then I had no more friends.

To be honest, “Ib” was one of the games that I really and truly enjoyed compared to other titles of the same genre that came around that time. The game presented a pretty innovative take on the horror genre, what with a theme of being lost in a weird art gallery, all in all with dozens of interesting characters, events and solid puzzles to enhance further the overall gameplay. Ib, a girl, nine years old, is the main protagonist of the game. Crimson- red colored eyes, chestnut-brown hair, red skirt, white blouse and a huge big mac in her hand. What seems like a casual visit to an art exhibition with her parents, slowly turns into nightmare of art and roses. It’s up to you to guide Ib to escape from the unnaturally behaving art gallery, one way or another!

The structure of the game revolves mainly around solving puzzles. That being said, the variety is huge, without any actual recycling or instances for backtracking. The art gallery is composed of levels, which are indicated by the different color of the flooring. Usually, your main goal is to find a key so you can proceed to each new level. However, once that is done, there is no actual need to go back to previously visited places. As a whole, the game makes sure you’ve go through,seen and explored everything. Ib do have an HP meter, which is represented by a Red rose. Harmful encounters exist in the form of actual moving enemies and certain interaction with specific objects. However, given that you get to restore all your potentially lost HP at water vases and that Ib outruns every existing enemy in the game, it is unlikely that you’ll find yourself getting a game over. The only factor for that is probably the lack of knowledge regarding certain areas, mainly the [panic] ones.

“Ib” took me a while to fully complete. No doubt, this is one of the entries I’ve spent lots of my personal time on. Continuing with further explanation of the game, I’ll also note down certain aspects that were the main reason for me to replay the game over 15 times!

At certain point in the game, Ib meets two additional human [?] characters – Garry and Mary. At that point, once they join party with Ib, interacting with specific objects and responding in certain ways during conversations will ultimately determine their fate, as well as your own. Numerous endings with different outcomes are featured in the game, with some being pretty easy and obvious as to how to obtain. Now, I’ve played the game before a lot and I remember managing to get to every single one without any problems whatsoever. The same thing also happened on a session around a month ago. HOWEVER, after the request, I started having trouble getting to endings which I was always able to. How could have that happen?…

The “True Guertena Exhibit” is a place that unlocks after you beat the “NewGame+” dungeon, which I’ve never seen before, but I really enjoyed as an addition. However, for things to unlock in it, you need to replay the game various times. This made me fly through the game a number of times, missing on objects, interactions and sections which I thought to be…

… of no actual value to the game’s main requirements for a successful run. Saving time eh? And I was wrong. I went as far as to consult with the actual wiki and I saw what my downfall was. Everything in the game matters, even reading a simple note that stands on the side, looking unimportant and whatnot. But on a single run where I’ve went through everything and saved at key locations, that would let me view the endings that I desire, that could have never been the case. Is the intended replay value a huge minus to the game’s structure? I’ll let you be the judge. I could say a thing like: “Maybe the game could’ve had at least some sort of point indicator regarding your actions, be it even indirect one.” I’ve played a game recently with such and I was really pleased with the results. I’m not sure what to say about “Ib” when it comes to that matter. Maybe I just lack common sense, maybe things were placed way out of their way? Who KNOWS?

In the end, I still like “Ib” for what it is – A really fun game, with good puzzles and bits of classy horror. Yes, horror should be experienced as an idea, not as an actual feeling! Don’t watch “Jason X”.

Did I mentioned that I like the graphics and music in “Ib”? If not, there it is! They are pretty great. [spoiler///…;l, I LOVE MARY/..\\\ []] I remember Ib fans hating Mary fans for some reason, while Garry fans being just “Whatever…” GOOD TIMES! 9 out of 10 this gmae!

Red Eyes is creepy! I hate the places where it pop- up randomly! I really do!

Yes, there is also… the Hardcore modification of “Ib”, which adds that one fan- made ending and the option to play through the game with only 1 HP. However, there is a place that still heals you, as to make the puzzle for the fish key… possible/fair??? I don’t know, I’ve managed to play through the modification with full HP due to that! I’m laughing. [T]

Palette – It all started with an imaginary, memory detective

Long ago, long before the reign of dreaming Nikki, there was an old legend – one that gave birth to a new genre. A man called Nishida Yoshitaka stood up and yelled: “Screw turn- based battles! They are such a boring and annoying part in RPGs, compared to exploring and interacting with the overworld!” He then worked for seventy months and five hours and his hands shaped a creation – “Hello, amnesia Madotsuki!”–, also known as B.D. , the starring character in a game called “Palette”. The guy also made the game. Yes.

While it is unlikely that he actually said those words, the man showed a great example regarding how you can set a new horizons by striving away from the usual meta formulas. To a certain extend, I do also prefer overworld interactions more than the turn based battles – This dates way back to my childhood where I would play RPGs and be annoyed by the repetitive fights after a while. In addition to that – The various prolonged boss battles that tend to punish you via silly RNG elements or just because you forgot to stock on a certain item, failed to use a specific ability and so on and so on! However, there are still games where the developers managed to balance things up and put together even elements like that in a way the player would find enjoyable. That’s why I’m not completely discarding games with turn- based battles. Isn’t this the case for pretty much every genre as a whole?

Years ago, when I stumbled upon “Palette” for the first time, I remember not having any actual fun with the game. That wasn’t because there was anything wrong with the game itself, but mostly because I didn’t have the patience to let it show me its unique value. I blame the pressure from university and the succubus who taught me how to fly a kite! Anyways, I played “Palette” briefly, but even though I dropped it, I promised myself that I would one day come back to it and figure things out properly.

So here I am now with properly figured- out things! “Palette” is a game about a girl named B.D. who tries to retrieve her lost memories. As a whole, this sums up the whole game, but there are still additional details that enhance  the experience a bit further. Paying attention to the whole plot development can be a bit hard, but it’s a must if you wish to fully enjoy the game. The actual gameplay revolves around exploration and interacting with objects, which might sound like nothing new under the whale’s teeth, BUT…

…there is the additional aspect of restriction. You are limited at first when it comes to how much you can make B.D. explore and where to go. Rather than going all willy-nilly over the place, you actually need a bit of careful planning. When you run out of energy, the game resets back to your initial starting position, which as a whole, helps a lot when it comes to backtracking – a common aspect in the game! Of course, as one can expect, the more you progress in the game, the more your maximum energy level will increase. You’ll manage to travel further and uncover more places and objects and WIN THE GAME EVENTUALLY! Doesn’t that sound special and exciting?!?! I am acting like a total asshole, but that won’t change the fact that this game is pretty good and the author really managed to shape it up real nice. You have an energy level meter in the game.

Palette DONE!

I personally enjoyed the graphics and visuals in the game. RPGDenter87 is an old engine, but I am even older, thus, totally impressed by everything done with it! There is also the PS1 version, but that’s gonna be for another post, sometime in the future, where I’ll probably forget the fact that I once managed to eat a whole bottle of mustard on my own. Such is the cruel reality of the aging process.

I think “Palette” is a solid 8.8 out of 10 material. Please give me good feedback on my IGN profile so I can get money and release my “Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge” nude mode! Thank you!

How I scored 100 000 000 points on a really hard video game with the power of this NEW ENERGY DRINK!

100 000 000 score points. 5 hours and a half play time. Around 200 breath- taking loops of level one! Not a single bathroom break! How is that even possible you might ask?

With the brand new energy drink “NUKE”, you’ll have all the energy to explode and take on the most toughest of video games – Like the “Kemono Souls Friends” and “Pizza Malaria of Edinburgh.” You’ll also dissolve and die in a short while after the first can, but surely, you’ll be remembered for your deeds. Look at what I’ve done for example! I am now part of history, baby! Video Game history! Do you see yourself being able to score that many points? You do? No! You don’t! Don’t do it! It’s impossible! I’ll find you if you do it! I really will!…

Spooks – A good example which proves that your first-made video game can be actually good.

Here we are with the next AGS game,once again by the same author that did “Little Girl in Underland”.However,this time the game managed to age quite well and there is an actual gameplay to it!What amazed me recently was the fact that this was that author’s first game that she ever made!Now,I played “Spooks” a few years ago,by which I mean around seven or eight years,and let me tell you,this game didn’t felt like a first-time game at all!

The plot itself can really grab you right from the start.You play as a ghoul girl named Mortia,you go to a carnival in the land of the dead and you manage to win a living goldfish at one of the minigames.[She names the goldfish Spooks!]From that point on,you decide to bring the goldfish back to the land of the living,and that sold me right away!The cast of characters in the game is pretty pleasant,the dialoge is interesting and the puzzles are pretty fitting.By fitting I mean that you might have trouble solving them,but it’s nothing ridiculous like in other popular adventure game titles.Actually,most of the puzzles use a pretty classic AG formulas,but some are pretty original.I always liked the combination of using a classic idea,along with something original to spice things up.

…and all the art and graphics are done solely in MS Paint?And they look so great?What is this witchery?I liked the idea of dead things being black and white-grayish and living things being marked with lively colors.Oh,what do you know?That’s everything about this game!

OH NO SPOILER ALERT!MORTIA BECOMES ALIVE AND SHE REACHES THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF TAKING A NAP!Now that’s the best plot’s twist that someone can make!

You know,this is a good example that sometimes if you invest your time and resources into something that might seems hard or impossible to achieve,like Mortia bringing Spooks back to the land of the living,you might end up being rewarded for it way more than you could possibly expect.

And you know,making a video game doesn’t have to be involved with rushing or basing it on something viral.Take your time and be yourself.It’s not like we need more Unity crap right now!Or maybe we do?Maybe I do?I am strangely attracted to horrible games,but sadly,this one fails to fit into that category…

Spooks gets a 7.9 out of 10.While being a great and enjoyable game,I feel like it lacked a bit of something to really bring me to give it a higher score.That and the fact that I am a big old jerk.There we go!
