What I like, is when free to play video games are of such high quality, that they make others, pay to game titles, look like complete garbage soup. There are lots of good, free games out there! “Toadette Strikes Back” is a title made by the same person who made “Psycho Waluigi” – Another very good, free to play game, that I covered in the past!

Nintendo’s cutie Toadette, gets her own fan- made game and it’s quite the feast for fans of the platforming genre! The author, Thunder Dragon, really knows how to bring us a quality product that managed to capture the style of magic of NIntendo, if not, with even more flavor to the recipe.

This is a pretty pretty game! The graphics are really nice and the controls are well done. Where it stands as your typical run and jump game, there is a lot more on the table, what with many gimmicks from classic Mario games enhancing the experience even further. You got the hammer weapon, the fire flower, the Yoshi, the Homing Pigeon, the Armageddon! Over 100 classic weapons, some of which are not even in the game!

The level design is really good! In addition, there are collectable medals in each level, that will provoke your exploration desires for sure! Levels are not too long or short, but just of the right length. This makes exploring and overall progress fly by,which keeps the player interested. Save feature is also available if you need to throw out the trash or lie down for a bit and rethink your recent life choices.

Regarding difficulty, this game is pretty generous. For veterans, “Hard” is more or less of essence for a good time. As for the whole difficulty progress scaling, it’s done well enough! You are bound to have some trouble towards the end, but nothing too special to talk about over the phone with your mother. The bosses are pretty neat and challenging! Aiming for full completion of the game is kind of a must, if one wishes to experience all the great extra levels and the secret boss fight at the end! Level variety is pretty good! Just like in “Psycho Waluigi”, each one always adds something new and interesting to the gameplay experience!

If you are a fan of “Super Mario Bros 2 Doki Doki Popcorn Aquila”, this game is like a reimagination – sequel. Some levels from SMB2 do make an appearance, with some tweaks and changes here and there. There’s more to this, but I’ll leave it there! The music is great and the plot is pretty fancy and charming, the comfy edition.

It may seem that I do not say much about this game. Truth to be told, this title is pretty straightforward and there isn’t anything to complain about, really. I did find some glitches though…

All the Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll – Getting on top of it! /the mountain/

Was it on my eight or my ninth birthday, I cannot remember. My family took me to a certain big city, that’s just two hours travel time by car, from my hometown. We went to some fancy place where I saw technology, new and amazing. At one corner, we stopped, where lots of famiclone games were on a display. They even played demos on many big screens at the back. I saw “Aladdin” by Hummer Team and I really wanted to get that cartridge. However, my mother and brother were more interested in another game, to which I payed little attention at the time. There was a demo of “Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll”, which seemed really amazing at the time, what with its isometric perspective. Given that we never saw any game like it before, looks like that were easy to fool one into thinking that it’s something advanced way beyond! We bought the cartridge, boy, was it expensive! Calculated in dollars, it was around five or so. As far as cartridge pricing went, we always thought that anything five and above was too expensive for a video game. I was really sad about not getting the “Aladdin” cartridge, but at the same time, I was really curious and looking forward to playing the new, unknown game. It brought joy to our whole family, especially the first level, as I was still trying to figure out the controls and whatnot. As the days went by, me and my brother managed to advance bit by bit, level by level. We uncovered the secret of the swimming gear, but alas, our journey was bound to end on the geysers level. Not because we couldn’t handle the difficulty of it, but because the game was broken. There was an error in the code that the pirates made when they were making the cartridge. It made the geysers show up once and then every object [the geysers and also the enemies] in the level disappeared, making it unplayable. This was a pretty unique moment in my life, as it was the first time where I was introduced to the concept of a game being broken in a certain way. We even tried to find ways to get pass the error that occur, but nothing managed to work out. What’s even more sad is that we never knew about ALL the existing warps in the game, some of which could have let us skip the level that breaks the game. I lend the cartridge to a girl from my class a few years after and she never gave it back. FREAKIN’ GIRLS!!!

Snake Rattle 'N Roll NES DONE!

Time passes. I grow up. Memories shatter and new ones are created. I become the founder of Laboratory Room 19. I am now the best video game player person in the universe. I stumble upon “Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll” once again and my burning passion to avenge my childhood “Me” and make him happy explodes like a nuclear warhead.

After all these years, I sure had trouble getting used to the controls once again. Three playthroughs is all that it took! “Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll is a pretty interesting take on the classic “Snake” game we all love and adore. Apart from the isometric view, there is a good amount of decent platforming, various gimmicks to keep each new level fresh and interesting, along with neat enemies, like giant feet that jump around in certain patterns, with the potential of squishing you. The object of the game is to look around for colorful pebbles, / I like to believe that they are actually gumdrops./ consume a certain amount of them and then go to a weight scale, which will open the exit door, if your snake is fed enough. You attack things with your tongue. Holding the attack button extends your tongue and that’s a good fact to have in mind. Certain enemies require constant, rapid attacks, otherwise they heal back if you can’t input enough damage in a given time. We had famiclone controllers with turbo function back in the days. But doing this on the keyboard was quite the nightmare! Some of the lesser enemies in later stages are manageable, but the giant feet are outright really annoying to kill. For one thing, it is actually easier to avoid them, rather than wasting time. Time limit is not that big of a deal in the early stages, but becomes really picky in the last two stages.

So what happened once I got back to the geysers level and managed to play it the proper way? The section of the level that I never managed to play turned out to be pretty tough. Especially near the exit. That one place! Timing geyser jumps along with the strong water currents sure can eat through your lives counter. You have to land perfectly on a one tile square, without overshooting your momentum! I was really happy about what I found in the next level! There was swimming and fish gumdrops! Did I mentioned that the pebbles/gumdrops appear in various forms? Like, with legs, wings, springs and whatnot. It’s a pretty unique feature and it makes the game really interesting! Anyways, the swimming level is pretty easy and it holds lots of power -ups, which you are bound to need, given the nature of the next two levels. The last levels of the game. The no- fun zone. Ice town Canada! Everything is icy and slippery and these levels eat lives like they are NOTHING! I was really frustrated at those levels! I even thought that 1CC run would be impossible, because of how hard those levels felt! But others managed to do it, so why couldn’t I?

Practice makes perfect, but there is once instance that can really ruin it for you! The stair climb of the last level, right before the boss. I can’t even remember how many people and things I cursed because of it. I’m not sorry! I like it when games can ignite your passion via their difficulty scaling. Eventually, I managed to learn how use the right momentum in the icy stages. I learned that jumping a lot and not taking your time with the platforms can be quite punishing. As long as you take it easy and you take notice of where the ice platforms are going to slide you to, even the stairs can be a piece of cake! The final boss battle puts you against an ordinary giant foot enemy, with lots of HP. This battle isn’t as hard as it’s more of an annoyance, really. Learn the foot’s patterns, position near the center and try to follow its trail once it gets past you, while trying to input as much damage as possible, until you lick the foot clean and make it explode. Just the way how I satisfy my clients…

The music in this game is pretty great and memorable. There is also a 2 – player coop., which makes things pretty easier, as long as both players take their time to wait for one another. Defeating the giant feet in 2 – player mode is way, way easier. The final boss itself is a big joke against two snakes!

The game’s difficulty spike goes quite up once you get past half of the game. If you take your time to learn the game though, it’s pretty satisfying being able to beat it. Isn’t that how it is with hard games in general?

Snake Rattle 'N Roll Genesis DONE!

Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll was also ported to the Genesis. Compared to the NES title, there are a few differences between the two. Enhanced and additional graphics. New bonus areas that really, really suck. New and remastered soundtrack. In the flying carpet level, the carpet at the end of the level that disappears every few seconds can be disabled and turned into a normal carpet, if the player kills the giant foot near there. In the geysers level, the last, hard part was changed. Now you can use the geyser at the end to jump strait to the exit door and the giant foot for that area was removed. The controls in the game are much more fluid and momentum is easier to master, especially in the ice levels. Enemies are easier to kill, but giant feet feel like a bit harder to take down now. The lowest layer at the start of the geysers level has been changed too. By change I mean that someone placed that one jumping spike at a really rude place. REALLY RUDE! You either have to get pixel perfect near it to kill it on the one square platform or just sacrifice one HP to bypass it. While the giant feet feel harder to kill, the final boss felt easier to take down, for some reason.

Once you beat the game, there is an extra stage that was not presented in the NES version. While it’s not all that complex in structure, what makes it a bit annoying to complete is the time limit. If you fail to beat it in time, you get sent back all the way to the start of the level! It can get pretty frustrating, especially if you don’t get good pebbles from the dispensers.

For the most part, the Genesis version feels a bit easier, but I really enjoyed the extra content and the few changes here and there. I also beat the high score, which resets you back to zero and beyond. I outta do a video of this at some point…

Sneaky Snakes DONE!

Did you know? There is a sequel to “Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll”! It’s for the Game Boy under the title “Sneaky Snakes”! This one however drops the isometric view and it’s just a side scrolling platformer. The main theme of the game is still intact and it works surprisingly well with this perspective. Old pebble types make a comeback and there are new ones. I really enjoyed the bee/ wasp ones! They just latch on to you and take you all over the level! The levels are pretty fun and the game is not all that hard, even towards the end. There are many new gimmicks to keep your attention, like the balloon sections that I really, really hated. There are also instant dead spikes at some point, which I bypass pretty easily, without even feeling bothered about their nature. There is also that one section where you push a ball and use it as a platform. It’s actually way easier than it looks at first. You just have to TAKE IT EASY! SNAKES ARE ALL ABOUT TAKING IT EASY!

That’s why I’m writing a post about video game snakes.

“Sneaky Snakes” features lots of fun and unfair bonus areas, which you are bound to fail in your first try, simply due to the lack of knowledge regarding which thing takes you to the exit. I remember there were things that you collect, but you can’t tell apart one another and hidden in one of them was the exit. I played these snake games more than six months ago…

The last boss in this game is outright weird and for some reason takes quite some time to put down. As a boss, its better than the foot for sure!

You get to save a lady snek. Cool game!

“Sneaky Snakes” is a decent platformer. Would suggest to all my friends and lovers!

A pair of leftover witches

What is a witch? A witch is a woman, usually at around the age of 19 to 1675, a genuine hoarder of various food ingredients, ancient magical artifacts and educational magazines from the 80s. Especially good at making delicious mushroom stew and mind- bending, juicy, frog cocktails, a witch would always say “No” to a game of poker without at least some minor gamble in it. A witch may build a store just for the sake of having one. Witches are pretty cool overall!

While Halloween was over almost a week ago, I still have some stuff that I didn’t managed to post for the spooky LR19 event, due to me getting sick and also having bad internet connection. Two of those games are “Witches” by James Burton and “Wendy: Every Witch Way” for the Game Boy Color…

Witches DONE!

“Witches” is a fairly old game by James Burton for the PC. I remember playing it quite a bit during my middle and high school years, though I would go only as far as reaching the 10th level or so. The story of the game revolves around a group of witches who start acting weird, way more weird than the usual weird, due to some unknown phenomenon. The youngest witch in the group remains unaffected though and she decides to unravel the mystery behind her sisters unusual behavior.

Controls are a bit clunky to be fair. You have two forms in the game – A normal one and a witch- transformation. During the normal one, you can walk, jump, duck, craw around, grab on to ledges and climb on, cast a limited number of spells… Picking up a broom item will let you transform into one of the witches you’ve defeated previously. In this form, you can fly and move freely around, while being able to cast a certain type of spell without any limit whatsoever. This form itself has a time limit and getting hit by an enemy will cancel it in an instant. Switching between both forms is a must if you wish to be able to successfully navigate through all the over- twenty levels in the game. Take care not to glitch inside a wall while using the witch form or get stuck in a place that requires a broom for you to take off! I was unfortunate enough to experience both and I resorted to using a password once to recover my progress! There were no enemies that I could use to kill myself and start from the checkpoint and sadly, there isn’t a button that would let you restart a level. Sometimes, hitting all the buttons helps with getting unstuck from a wall. Sometimes.

There is quite the huge variety of spells that you can cast. You can turn monsters into frogs, freeze them, make them levitate… Normal damage shot, explosive shot, triple shot, Contra 7 – the [SPIDER] wars. You can stop time, become immortal for a few seconds… For all the items, combined with the various monsters and bosses within’ the game, there is quite a lot to experience. Some levels are huge and present lots of opportunities for exploration. That’s it, unless you play on lower difficulty, where you get a map to help you out. Honestly, the highest difficulty feels like the most proper difficulty. One hit death, no maps – It calls for accurate performance and careful navigation, all and all while relying on a limited resources, in terms of items that’s it. The checkpoints in the game are pretty reasonable though!

Traverse vast mountains, get chased by a horde of vengeful frogs who used to be monsters, but got transformed by you and the spell is ’bout to expire, get eaten by witch- eating slimes, get spooked by gray- grave imps rising from the ground, climb clouds, drown in a swamp, get lost in an ice castle, have a deadly spider fall on your head as you ascend with a broom, get killed by a witch as you enter her chamber, without being able to do anything about it. There goes my hope for a no- death run, due to some silly RNG!

I love the music in the game. Classic classical music pieces are my hot pocket full of salami. The witch fights are pretty clever and innovative, though I can not say that for the last boss, who felt like one huge pile of mess. I don’t know if his design was based on the idea of making the fight difficult, but if so, that certainly wasn’t the answer. If anything, the whole fight felt raw, boring and uninspired.

In the end, “Witches” is a game that I really enjoy and I am proud to put into my “best Halloween game pick” pick. Thank you for making, James Burton!!!

Wendy - Every Witch Way DONE!

Remember the gravity reverse gimmick from that one Mega Man game? “Wendy: Every Witch Way” ‘s whole gameplay is based solely on that, just like that one game with the lots of Vs in its name. Though here, there are linear levels and you can defend against dark arts like snails and Tiki Men hiding in bushes! Also, you can take a number of hits from enemies, but spikes are still instant death. The overall level design is really good and I like how the gravity concept ACTUALLY affects certain enemies and platforming segments. The controls are pretty good and the graphics are pleasant. The difficulty is overall reasonable. While the final boss is quite easy, I’m glad that instead of making it entirely a shmup thing, they still made the main [gravity reverse] gimmick play an important role in it! Plot is about something something collecting magical stones and whatnot, it’s all good with me, really.

For my first “Game Boy Color” title that I’ve tried and played, I am more than satisfied with it. Wendy is a cute witch!

Gyossait + [The Hunt] – The Gods quarrel and the mechanical idea behind the butter blocks

Both “Gyossait” and “The Hunt” were gifted to me by Amon26 [The author of these fantastic titles! /spoiler], as a token of appreciation for saving his home from 592 Devil Boy game cartridges, all of which I have managed to successfully exorcise and put on sale at my garage!

Recently, I’ve covered two other titles from Amon26 – “Au Sable” and “All of Our Friends Are Dead”, wherein I’ve been left with a pretty good impression regarding the author’s work. “Gyossait” is quite similar in structure and gameplay to those two, though there are improvements in almost every aspect, from level design to visuals and whatnot. The huge impact within’ the game itself compared to Amon26’s previous works comes from the main protagonist, whom the player controls – Oyeatia, a God who decided to leave behind all his power and money, for the sake of going down to the earth realm in search for a goddess – Gyossait. The two have things to settle, feelings of love are at work, the usual Amon26’s vibe and style, Emmy awarding – last slice of the pizza badge, I’m glad I played this before I had to pay my taxes. No, let’s put the plot aside and look at the character from the gameplay perspective. His main tool of trade is a SHIELD! While its only purpose is to deflect bullets, I still find it pretty cool, given how rarely you get to see a character with this setup in video games. [ Like Olaf from “The Lost Vikings” and… Well, I guess Oyeatia and Olaf are the best shield- based- wielding-only  characters in video games that I know of and I find them to be pretty rad. There is Captain America too, but I am not a fan of his shield technique and I REALLY dislike that one NES game with him – Truly, those are two SOLID reasons alright!] While in the early part of “Gyossait” you’ll be playing mostly on the defensive side, at a certain point you are given a second tool – a gun. The gun replaces the shield and let’s you go on the offensive side, which potentially makes certain enemies and areas a bit easier to be dealt with. HOWEVER, one should be aware of how important gun control is, less they are willing to accept and deal with potential consequences that may or may not ultimately satisfy their expectations. I think that having the player play around or stick with a certain tool is a pretty good way of making a video game feel interesting and different in terms of gameplay, all in all while keeping the general level layout intact. It also enhances the replay value quite well! This game shows a pretty good example regarding that matter…

Gyossait DONE!

Look, yes! This game is yet another sea full of visually interesting and unique areas, enemies, NPCs, bosses and whatnot, along with the usual well- crafted flow of progression. BUT… what I am about to reveal to you are TWO major faults within’ this title that go towards the point of even making it UNPLAYABLE! I also realize now that this silly, joke statement contains a bit of truth to it… OH NO!

“Gyossait” has them key puzzles, non- puzzles parts too. Losing a key in the game is more generous than from past titles though, as the game tends to keep its location at the place of your death, rather than spawning it back at its starting location. SOMETIMES if you lose a key and it falls in a death pit of death or a drink, the game might get so disappointed by your performance, it might choose to not spawn the key back at the nearest safe- land land and instead – disintegrate it completely, which gets you stuck forever and you’ll have to restart the whole game…

There is also the addition of puzzles where you have to push blocks. The way those blocks move when they are pushed feels pretty weird, like they slide on ice. What’s even more weird is that once you step on them, your whole moving momentum changes and you slip- slide all over their surface. I had the unfortunate experience to slide off one near the end of the game and dive right into the death juice. For some reason that was during my second run of the game and it was then when I realized that they were coated in all- natural butter. I was quite upset about that death, which made me forgot about a well- placed enemy nearby. Once I got back to where I died and I jumped off the butter block, I was shot by the rude foe, which sent me back right into the drink. At that moment, I was ready to cry and call the police, but little did I knew, that the whole thing was an actual setup by the author, so the player can get that >(one)< silly achievement! Truly, a master- tier game design was at work!

The Hunt DONE!

“The Hunt” is a FPS, “Au Sable” spinoff, where you take on the role of a [hunter]. It’s pretty short, composed only of two fairly small levels. What I like about it is the unsettling atmosphere, to which the sound contributes greatly! We are not talking about the usual crap with dull screams or monster snores, we are talking about unique sound composition, on- spot along with pretty spicy visuals. Let me tell you about the actual selling point here – You go through the dark woods, you enter the shadowy ruins, all sorts of freaky things jump at you, but it’s alright since holding space bar destroys the world and everything in sight! During this whole time, your ears orgasm under the heavenly sonata by eldritch abominations from sector Z-27 to  dimensional plane 004-BH, until SUDDENLY your eyes spot upon the ultimate aspect of the game…

In conclusion

The Legend of Princess – FAQ: #1: How to find the “Dirt Temple”? – Well you see, back when I was in high school… 1/589

“The Legend of Princess” is supposed to be a parody game of a [certain] series, by Joakim Sandberg. The joke about it lies in the overall fact that nowadays you can take on a product that was shoved into people’s mouths for decades by a “really” important company, but make it way better in many aspects. Sometimes you’ve gotta watch it though, as a certain results may exceed the quality of the original product, leading to what we call a “Lonely Barbeque Party”. You should know when to turn the volume down, less you want to grab the attention of your whiny and jealous neighbours, who would call the police on your ass instantly! You don’t want that to happen, do you? DO YOU?

“The Legend of Princess” is quite the take when it comes to the platforming genre of said [certain] parodied series. It’s colorful and graphically pretty impressive, well animated and fairly entertaining for how short in terms of length it is. While you do get to explore only the classic “Dirt Temple” which is composed merely of a several rooms, the whole short experience is way worth your time. What with the responsive controls and being able to customize your equipment before the start of the game, with items varying from boring to awkward to use, this game really holds it up! The puzzles and the platforming sections felt pretty basic and a bit unsatisfying, but the boss battles really managed to fill up the holes. A mixture of puzzle and a drop of action, packed with a hue of pretty. That’s this game in a nutshell!

Legend of Princess DONE!

I mean, if you are a fan of [those] series, you are bound to have some good times, given how close this game parody tries to stay to the original, what with the characters, items and whatnot. Whether you decide to play it for some casual fun, high score or for the intention of an UNIQUE speedrun, 20 to 30 minutes of your life would be spent worthwhile. Hell, you might even want to play through the game with all the different item combinations! Short games with a decent variety, now that’s my JAM!

I personally give this an 8 out of 10!
